I get what you mean about having to be in the mood to read certain comics. I'm the same way. Sometimes I'll say some something is a "smooth" read, which is my clumsy way of saying that I didn't have a hard time getting started.
For underground guys, I'd recommend Justin Green and Kim Deitch. Both are hard to get into, but they're both great.
I love Spain's comics, especially his autobio stories. If your library has My True Stories, I think you'd really like that book.
